BRICS Summit Addresses Expansion and New Candidates for Membership

In the upcoming BRICS summit, leaders of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) will discuss the expansion of the group during the scheduled August meeting, as confirmed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Several countries have expressed their interest in joining the BRICS group, with 13 nations formally applying for membership in April and six others informally inquiring about joining.

According to media reports, five new countries are expected to be accepted as new members during the summit, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Egypt, and Argentina. The summit, chaired by Cyril Ramaphosa, will take place in Johannesburg in August.

Despite concerns about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attendance due to legal issues, his invitation remains valid, and the meeting is set to proceed regardless of the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant.
