Uzbekistan blocks access to cryptocurrency exchanges abroad; Binance, Kraken, FTX and Huobi are included

The government of Uzbekistan has blocked internet access to unlicensed cryptocurrency exchanges located outside the country, citing the need to protect its citizens from “scammers”.

According to a statement published by the government of Uzbekistan, activity on foreign exchange exchanges that provide services to citizens of the country has intensified, without these companies obtaining the necessary license to provide their services there.

In news reports, Russian news agency Sputnik writes that access to eight external crypto exchanges has already been blocked in Uzbekistan, including popular exchanges such as Binance, Kraken, FTX and Huobi Global.

The report stated that the only foreign exchange licensed in Uzbekistan so far is South Korea’s Cuba Group, which obtained its license in 2019.

Unlicensed companies “do not bear any legal responsibility for transactions with crypto assets, and cannot guarantee the legality of transactions, as well as the proper storage and protection of the confidentiality of personal data of citizens of the Republic of Uzbekistan,” the National Agency warned in a statement from Foresight Projects (NAPP).

As a result, access to these companies’ websites has been blocked, the statement said. The prohibited access to the internet applies to all cryptocurrency exchanges that “do not have a license” to operate the exchange under the laws of Uzbekistan.

The statement added that from January 1, 2023, individuals and companies in Uzbekistan can instead interact with cryptocurrency groups through local service providers operating in accordance with local regulations.

The government has continued to warn its citizens about the dangers of using cryptocurrency exchanges, saying they should be vigilant to make sure personal data is not leaked to “scammers”. She added that anyone who knows companies operating in violation of regulations should report them to the police.
